2GSMA|gsma/iot/|@gsma|iot@gsma FOREWORD The Fourth Industrial Revolution describes a dramatic stepchange in all of our lives. The confuence of high internet speeds, big data, the Internet of Things (IoT), analytics and artifcialintelligence (AI) will fundamentally alter the way we live andwork, intelligently connecting virtually every device, making ourcities smarter and our lives easier and more productive. Central to this will be the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT),which will help to increase productivity by streamlining andautomating manufacturing processes via internet connectivity.Overlaid with AI, cloud computing and advanced analytics, factories can monitor and interpret data from production linesand complex machinery in real time to anticipate faults, manageinfrastructure and mitigate risk. The captured data will, in turn, drive efciencies, optimise productivity and decrease costs inmany important economic sectors beyond manufacturing suchas resources, energy and telecoms. Backed by positive and proactive government support, China isbetting big on the IIoT and, as one of the world’s largest economies, ispoised to not only become the world’s leader in deploying solutionsbut beneft from enormous economies of scale. As the producer, supplier and end user of many of the world’s IoT-related sensorsand devices, China is in the early stages of this latest industrialtransformation. Intelligent production processes, collaborativemanufacturing and cloud manufacturing platforms will enableinterconnectivity and collaboration across the entire value chain.Location tracking will allow suppliers and manufacturers to monitorthe location of critical materials throughout the manufacturingcycle, pinpointing and resolving issues before they occur. China,as elsewhere, is also making advances in the area of AI which, with machine learning, will help factories and businesses managecomplex processes and drive innovation.China’s mobile operators will play a fundamental role in allof these developments by providing secure, reliable andintelligent connectivity to businesses and enterprises across thecountry. They are integral to the development of the IIoT andan invaluable and strategic partner for cities, governments andother organisations. The GSMA’s Internet of Things Programmeis working closely with all operators as well as other vendors inthe ecosystem to support and help accelerate the delivery ofcompelling and secure IoT solutions including Low Power WideArea networks, such as NB-IoT and LTE-M, which are helping tousher in innovative new services across the country.Through intelligent connectivity, China is creating a better futurefor its citizens and businesses and providing an example for therest of the world to follow. Largenumbers of connected sensors can monitor the performanceof complex physical machinery in real-time. The analysis of theresulting data can be used to optimize production and performpredictive maintenance, increasing efciency and generatinginsights that can be used to develop new processes. Thisconcept is known as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).The data captured by the Industrial IoT can also be used formachine learning to develop artifcial intelligence (AI) systems– a feld that is developing rapidly in China and elsewhere. In time, AI systems should be able to help people managecomplex industrial facilities efectively and efciently, with thesystem learning and refning its algorithms over time. This paper explores the development of the Industrial IoT inGreater China, drawing on interviews with six mobile operatorsin the region. It identifes the key trends in this sector, thebenefts seen by exponents of the Industrial IoT and thechallenges they face, before drawing conclusions about howdigital technologies will drive the next industrial revolution inEast Asia.。。。。。。
