DESCRIPTION The A540E automatic transaxle is a 4–speed, Electronic Controlled Transaxle (hereafter called ECT) developed exclusively for use with the high output 2VZ–FE engine. This transaxle features the following points: Torque control system has been adopted, which retards the ignition timing and reduces shift shock during up and down–shift. N to D squat control system has been adopted to reduce the shock when the transaxle is shifted to the D range from the N range. Engine and ECT ECU has been adopted, which incorporates the Engine Control Computer and Transaxle Control Computer. Fail–safe system has been adopted, which permits safe driving even when the electrical circuitry malfunctions. On–board diagnosis system has been adopted, which causes the O/D (overdrive) OFF indicator light to blink, informing the driver of the location of malfunction. The A540E automatic transaxle is mainly composed of the torque converter with lock–up clutch, the 4–speed planetary gear unit, the differential, the hydraulic control system and the electronic control system. Also, to minimize the possibility of incorrect operation of the automatic transaxle, a shift lock mechanism has been added.
