Introducton
he commercial drone industry saw
signifcant growth in 2016. Last August,
DroneDeploy announced that its users
had mapped more than 5 million acres—marking
a major milestone for our platorm. This February,
we reached another milestone: 10 million acres
mapped. With 10 million acres under our belt,
we have released our third Commercial Drone
Industry Trends report to highlight the progress
we’re seeing as aerial data contnues to provide
actonable insight for companies around the world.
New federal regulatons drive commercial
drone adopton
The recent passage of federal drone compliance
regulatons in countries such as the US and
Australia created a clear path of certfcaton for
pilots fying unmanned aircraf for commercial
applicatons, and provided further regulatory
certainty for large companies that previously
remained wary of drone adopton.
The increase in certfed pilots worldwide has
profoundly impacted the way companies capture
aerial data. With more operators certfed by
federal agencies, drone-based data capture is
quickly becoming an efcient and reliable way
for businesses to gather aerial insights and make
smarter business decisions. From farming, to
inspecton, to surveying, and beyond, companies
are rapidly integratng drones into their day-to-
day operatons—marking a sea change in the
commercial drone industry as major industry
players begin to roll out enterprise drone programs.
Surge in licensed pilots stmulate economies,
creatng jobs and commercial value
With an increase in commercial pilots, there’s
been signifcant impact on economies as new
businesses materialize and larger enterprises
embrace drones. As commercial drone usage
expanded, an ecosystem of drone platorms,
sofware developers, service providers, hardware
manufacturers and resellers has emerged.
In this report, we’ll take a closer look at the
evolving industry, and share the insights we’ve
discovered from DroneDeploy users who have
mapped 10 million acres in more than 160
countries, including:

Major Industries Turn to Drones Weekly for Aerial Data
ompanies both large and small are not
only integratng commercial drones into
day-to-day workfows, but relying on the
data drones provide. While adopton has grown
universally, there are some clear trailblazers who
have arisen since the last report. These industries
are partcularly ripe for drone integraton as they see
signifcant tme and costs savings over traditonal
data capture methods.
The latest innovatons in consumer hardware make
drones more accessible than ever. Newer drones
can deliver the performance required to meet
business needs at costs that deliver high ROI.
Consumer drone hardware takes on
commercial applicatons
Despite emerging competton, DJI and senseFly
remain the top leaders in the industry, making
up a signifcant percentage of the DroneDeploy
user base. Our data also suggests that a growing
number of pilots are now operatng multple drones
to meet the needs of expanding industry use cases.
Currently, 20% of DroneDeploy users are fying
multple drones, and this number is only expected
to increase moving forward.
Today,
84% of drone mapping is occurring on drone
models that cost $1500 or less
. Furthermore, fxed
wing drone use contnues to decline to just 3% of
users as it fnds its own niche in agriculture, oil, and
gas applicatons where longer range, linear fights
are more common. While there is stll demand for
specialized drone models, most mapping occurs on
afordable quadcopter drones. This is largely due
to advancements in mult-rotor drone hardware
and extended batery life that was previously only
available in more expensive models.
Companies becoming reliant on drone
mapping, further proving value
More than 60% of DroneDeploy users are creatng
maps each week as businesses grow more reliant
on drone data. It’s clear that drone mapping is
quickly fnding its role in the workplace by providing

Regardless of hardware choice, our users have increased weekly drone usage
20% since 2016. It’s clear that as our users experience greater revenue and
productvity ROI, they - in turn - are increasing the frequency of drone mapping
and further integratng drone data into day-to-day business operatons.

My favorite thing about DroneDeploy is the ease of it—just
copying the map over for the next week and then just literally
setng the drone out there and turning it on. It does a few
pre-checks and it takes o. Ease of access, fast and real-tme
data that I can share with everybody.

Commercial Drone Industry Trends: March 20175
Drone Mapping Drives Job Creaton, Stmulates Economies
ince the passage of the federal regulatons
such as US FAA Part 107 rule, the industry
saw its largest increase in licensed pilots to
date. According to statstcs provided by the FAA,
almost 29,000 commercial drone pilots have been
certfed as of December 2016*
—with an estmated
2,000 registratons submited daily. At this rate, the
FAA predicts that more than 420,000 commercial
drone pilots will be licensed by 2021.
As one can imagine, this is having a dramatc efect
on local and natonal economies. By bolstering
existng industries—and creatng entrely new
businesses—drones are generatng a lot of
economic value for enterprises and entrepreneurs
alike. While it’s hard to determine exact value
created, by our own conservatve estmates
DroneDeploy users have
generated more than
$150,000,000** in economic value
to the industry
over 10 million acres mapped.
Drone service providers ofering mapping
emerge as key industry ambassadors – and
benefciaries
Drone Service Providers (DSPs)—who are ofen
contracted to capture drone data for larger
businesses—comprise 18% of the DroneDeploy
user base. Today, they serve as industry
ambassadors as they work across industries
to showcase the power drones can provide
businesses.
Through a pricing study conducted using data
from DroneDeploy and
Airstoc
, we discovered
that
service providers who specialize in mapping are
earning 16% more— $168/hr on average—than those
who only ofer general photo/video services
. Drone
mapping delivers signifcant cost and tme savings.
Businesses are constantly looking to innovate by
improving or replacing inefcient processes, and
drones are making this possible. Drone mapping
provides 3X tme and costs savings compared to
traditonal methods. What once may have taken
days or weeks can be efciently captured and
analyzed in hours, giving unprecedented insights
to businesses in record tme. We frequently hear
